Airedale Terrier - Airedales are a solid, sturdy breed appearing with a tan double-coat with select markings in black or dark grizzle, occasionally white or red. The weather-proof topcoat has a coarse, wiry feel to it, while the undercoat lining is soft and linty. Soft, v-shaped ears folded to the front and slightly to the side accompany a round, black nose to provide the Airedale a cuddly appearance. A long, flat head and highly-set tail complement the Airedale’s “lanky” gait. The Airedale’s highly intelligent, responsive nature makes the breed quick to catch on to new commands and apt to respond to a challenge. While demonstrating the potential to be trained on very advanced levels, Airedales can be somewhat challenging students, as they do not respond to many standard training techniques in a way that most other breeds will. Stimulation, not repetition, is the key. Airedales have a very emphatic, loyal nature about them, and often remain stand-offish towards strangers or infrequent guests. As puppies, Airedales tend to play somewhat rough, doing best in homes that do not contain small children or pets. Originating during the late 1800’s for hunting otter in the country of York, the Airedale was named after England’s Valley of the Aire, where lots of small game flourished. Used as a police dog and army sentry dog during World War II, Airedales have historically made fine watch, guard, hunting, and tracking dogs. Sometimes called the, “King of Terriers”, Airedales are the largest of all the terrier breeds. Typically hardy, they can live to reach 10-12 years of age, standing 22-24” in height and weighing between 40-65lbs once fully mature.
