Ferret - The Ferret is a small, elongated mammal of the weasel family. Appearing with blaze, panda, and mitt markings, the Ferret’s sleek, short albino, black, sable, champagne, or cinnamon coat can be seen in various color concentrations. Shedding during the spring and fall, the Ferret’s coat has a natural oil that is best when bathed as seldom as possible. The Ferret’s nails require frequent trimming. Easily excitable, energetic, and playful, Ferrets require at least a few hours per day to be active and exercise, preferably during dawn and dusk hours. During the rest of their time, they can be found sleeping. Ferrets are known to be somewhat mischievous, with a knack for relocating random objects that range in size, value, and purpose, and enjoy any opportunity to frolic, rough-house, tease, or chase other Ferrets or their owners. Homes containing multiple Ferrets usually exist harmoniously; however, when coexisting with other pet breeds or children, supervision is recommended. Ferrets originated more than 2,500 years ago as a domesticated descendant of one or both of the European or Steppe polecats. These curious little creatures have historically been used to retrieve rabbits from holes and protect grains that had been harvested, more recently being used to run cables and wires through conducts. Ferrets arriving in the U.S. more than 300 years ago, and gained in popularity as a pet during the 1970’s. Ferrets grow to reach 13-18” in length at 2-5lbs. in weight once fully mature, with an average lifespan of 6-10 years of age.
