Labrador Retriever - With an eagerness to learn and gentle temperament to match, the Labrador Retriever remains one of America’s most popular breeds of choice for both sporting, as well as, pet purposes. The Labrador Retriever’s short, waterproof coat appears in shades that range from black, to yellow, to chocolate. Kind, expressive eyes of brown or hazel complement a broad, clean-cut head and close-hanging ears to give the Labrador Retriever an intelligent appearance. Webbed toes and a wide, otter-like tail that serves as a rotor while swimming provide the Labrador Retriever with an underwater, swimming advantage. Labrador Retrievers are an exceptionally mild-mannered breed with an energetic and accommodating attitude. This pleasant temperament, along with an open willingness to learn, has led the Labrador Retriever to specialize in many fields- including search and rescue, detection and therapy work, and most popularly, as hunting retrievers. Originally referred to as the Newfoundland or St. John's dog, Labrador Retrievers were first bred and used by fishermen during the late 1800’s. The dogs would aid fishermen by fetching their nets and bringing them and their floating corks to shore. The Labrador Retrievers’ lifespan generally lasts 12-13 years; growing to reach 21-24” at the withers and weighing between 55-75lbs. once fully mature.
