American Pit Bull Terrier - The Pit Bull is a stocky, robust breed with round eyes and a tapered tail. It’s short, shiny coat appears in any shade ranging from white to fawn, to black. With an unsurpassed tenacity, broad head, powerful jaw, and muscular neck and body, Pit Bulls are a popular breed of choice for those with an agenda to produce an ideal fighting dog. Unfortunately, historical abuse of this breed’s natural attributes has made the American Pit Bull a victim of an undue and quite misrepresented image. When handled and socialized properly, American Pit Bulls make exceptionally good-natured, loving pets, suitable in homes containing both adults, as well as, children. Obedient, protective, and loyal by nature, Pits strive to accommodate and please their owners. They are an intelligent and willful breed that excels in most all canine tasks- from herding, to guarding, hunting, and even policing. Pits are more prone to become aggressive towards other types of animals than towards people, and thus, are best suited in homes that do not have other types of pets. If proper and adequate exercise is allotted, Pits do well living in environments without a yard. Though originally bred and used as fighting dogs in England and Ireland during the 1800’s, today’s American Pit Bull Terrier so complements today’s befitted owner. As adults, American Pit Bull Terriers reach 18-22” in height, most commonly weighing between 30-75lbs. The lifespan for an average Pit Bull is approximately 12 years of age.
