Many of these reptile species from turtles, to snakes, to lizards, provide pet-seekers and animal enthusiasts with a cold-blooded alternative to owning a standard, furry animal as a companion or pet. From snakes, to lizards, turtles, or iguanas, Reptiles are said to be kept as pets in 1 out of every 7 homes; closely competing with Birds as the 3rd most popular pet type today. Reptiles are vertebrates hindered by an inability to maintain a proper level of body heat. They rely predominantly on outside sources to warm them, thus, require living environments that will either allow the animal with access to the sun, or are equipped with artificial lights that provide heat alternatively. Reptiles are most popularly kept in terrariums, which are large aquarium tanks that have been specially modified to fit this very interesting type of pet’s needs. In order to avoid Salmonella poisoning, sanitizing one’s hands is, of course, recommended following the handling of any Reptile, just as careful supervision is always a good idea when children are involved.
