Shih Tzu - With a long, hypoallergenic coat appearing in a wide variety of colors, the Shih Tzu is a compact, yet stalwart, dog breed. A short snout, dark, bulbous eyes, and upturned direction of facial hair give the Shih Tzu a characteristic, “chrysanthemum” shaped face. Carried above the Shih Tzu’s torso is a profuse, flag-like tail. The Shih Tzu’s eyes and coat require frequent, if not daily, maintenance and upkeep. Noted for a vivacious and charismatic attitude, the Shih Tzu is very people-oriented, making a fine addition to any home with or without children. Both intelligent and vigilant, Shih Tzu’s do best with regular play and exercise both outdoors and in. Management of the Shih Tzu’s long coat, and, a proneness to be overly sensitive to harsh temperatures, `makes the breed best suited for apartment-living. Also known as the Imperial Shih Tzu, Chinese or Tibetan Lion Dog, and the Chrysanthemum Dog, the Shih Tzu originated as the product of a cross between the Pekingese and Lhasa Apso hundreds of years ago. Exclusively owned by Chinese Imperials until the last century, Shih Tzu’s are now one of the most popular companion breeds of dog recognized by the AKC today. Living to reach 11-15 years of age on average, Shih Tzu’s generally grown to reach 8-11” in height, weighing between 9-16lbs.
